Moving house is one of the most stressful life events you can go through — but it doesn't have to be. The difference between a chaotic moving day and a smooth one almost always comes down to preparation. After hundreds of moves across Sydney's Northern Beaches, from Manly to Avalon and everywhere in between, we've seen first hand what works and what doesn't.
This guide gives you everything you need to know to prepare for moving day, save time, and protect your belongings in the process.
Start Planning at Least 4 Weeks Out
The biggest mistake people make is leaving everything too late. A good rule of thumb is to start preparing at least four weeks before your move date. Here's a simple week-by-week breakdown:
4 weeks out:
Book your removalist early — particularly in summer and around school holidays, quality removalists book out fast on the Northern Beaches
Start collecting boxes, packing tape and bubble wrap
Declutter room by room and donate or sell what you don't need
2 weeks out:
Begin packing non-essential items (books, décor, spare linen, seasonal clothing)
Notify your electricity, gas, internet and water providers of your move date
Update your address with Medicare, the ATO, your bank and Australia Post
1 week out:
Pack all non-essential rooms completely
Confirm your booking with your removalist — including start time, addresses and crew size
Check your home and contents insurance covers goods in transit (many policies do — it's worth a quick call to your provider)
The night before:
Pack an essentials box (see below)
Charge your phone fully
Make sure your removalist has clear, accurate addresses for both pick-up and delivery
Pack an Essentials Box First
This is the single most useful thing you can do — and most people forget it. Pack a clearly labelled box (or bag) with everything you'll need on the day and on your first night, and keep it with you rather than on the truck.
Your essentials box should include:
Phone charger and any device chargers
Kettle, coffee, tea and a couple of mugs
Toilet paper
Towels and a change of clothes
Kids' snacks and any medications
Basic tools (screwdriver, Allen key for bed reassembly)
A pen and notepad
Important documents (lease/contract, passport, valuables)
Snacks and water for moving day
When the truck is unloaded and you're exhausted, you'll be glad you don't have to dig through twenty boxes to find your phone charger.
Label Every Box — Properly
Vague labels slow everything down. Instead of writing just "kitchen" on a box, write the destination room **and** a brief description of the contents:

✅ Kitchen — pots, pans, utensils (HEAVY)
❌ Bedroom
✅ Main bedroom — bedding and pillows (FRAGILE top — clock)
Use a different coloured marker or coloured tape for each room. This makes it effortless for removalists to place boxes in the right spots immediately, which saves time and therefore saves you money on an hourly-rate job.
Prepare Your Home Before the Truck Arrives
A few simple things before your removalist arrives make a big difference to how efficiently the day runs:
Clear a parking spot as close to your front door as possible for the truck. If you're on a busy Northern Beaches street, put a bin or a cone out the night before to reserve the space.
Disassemble large furniture where you can — bed frames, flat-pack wardrobes, and large bookshelves. If you're unsure how, leave it and let your removalist know in advance.
Protect your floors and walls — lay down old towels or cardboard along high-traffic corridors, especially if you have timber floors.
Separate items not being moved — put anything staying behind (or going to the tip) in a room that's clearly signed "DO NOT MOVE." This avoids any confusion on the day.
Make sure pets are secured — a stressed dog or cat loose during a move is a recipe for chaos. Arrange for pets to be at a neighbour's or in a contained room.
How to Pack Fragile Items Safely
Fragile items are where most damage happens, and almost always because they weren't packed well enough. Here's how to do it right:
Glasses and crockery: Wrap each piece individually in packing paper or bubble wrap. Pack upright in a box (not flat), with crumpled paper filling any gaps. Label the box FRAGILE on all four sides and the top.
Mirrors and artwork: Use a purpose-made mirror box (most hardware stores stock them), or sandwich between two pieces of cardboard and tape into a flat bundle. Always carry vertically, never flat.
TVs and electronics: Ideally use the original box if you still have it. If not, wrap in a moving blanket and place upright. Never lay a flat-screen TV flat in a truck.

What to Have Ready at Your New Home
Getting into your new home efficiently is just as important as getting out of the old one. Before moving day:
Confirm you'll have access from the time your removalists are expected to arrive
If it's an apartment, book the service lift in advance (body corporate usually requires this)
Do a quick walk-through of the new property and decide in advance where your large furniture will go — telling your removalist "couch on the left wall" saves time versus working it out when you're tired and everything is half-unpacked
Have the utilities connected before you move in — you'll want hot water and power on arrival
On the Day: Tips to Keep Things Moving
Be ready when your removalists arrive. Every minute of delay at pick-up extends the job and costs you money.
Do a final walkthrough of every room, cupboard, shed and garage before the truck leaves.
Check under beds and in overhead cupboards — these are where things get left behind.
Keep children and pets out of the way during loading and unloading — both for safety and efficiency.
Communicate clearly with your team. If something is fragile, say so. If you want something placed in a specific spot, tell them. A good removalist will always welcome direction.
